Large Intestine 4 (LI4) - Hegu

The second of the two meridians associated with the Metal element is called the Large Intestine, governing a bodily network involving the organ itself, the nasal passages, the throat, and the body’s outer defences. It regulates the elimination of waste, the final reabsorption of fluids and the ability to completely “let go” of burdening emotions.

Large Intestine 4 (LI4) is widely considered one of the most powerful and frequently used acupuncture points, treating conditions that affect the head, neck, face, and sensory organs. However, it carries an important tradition of caution. LI4 is generally contraindicated during pregnancy because it strongly moves Qi and blood, which can stimulate uterine contraction. For this reason, it is typically avoided throughout pregnancy, except when deliberately used to assist labour or induce delivery in overdue pregnancy.

The name “Hegu” translates to “Joining Valley,” hinting at its location on the body: the fleshy valley between the thumb and index finger. One practical method to locate it is to pinch the thumb and index finger together, revealing the muscular bulge at the high point of that junction. Stimulate this point by gently massaging it with your finger in circular motions for 30 seconds.

To explore the functions of the Large Intestine and discover other key therapeutic points along its meridian, take a look at The Psyche in Chinese Medicine: Treatment of Emotional and Mental Disharmonies with Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs by Giovanni Maciocia, Chapter 16 of Shiatsu Theory and Practice by Carola Beresford-Cooke, and, for beginners and self-care, The Acupuncture Point by Chris Jarmey & Ilaira Bouratinos.

Key benefits of stimulating LI4 are:

Body pains and tension

  • Relieves headaches, migraines, and toothaches
  • Eases neck and shoulder pain
  • Soothes menstrual cramps

Illness and external pathogens

  • Expels cold and flu
  • Clears fever
  • Helps with a sore throat and runny nose

Emotional stress

  • Relieves stress
  • Calms irritability or anxiety
  • Helps release repressed emotions

Regulates the bowels

  • Excellent for constipation
  • Reduces bloating

The power of point pairing: Large Intestine 4 (LI4) and Liver 3 (LV3)

LI4 and LV3 are acupuncture's most famous point combination. When pressed together, it feels like opening four gates, allowing Qi and Blood to flow freely through the body.

The pairing works because each point governs a different territory. LI4 moves Qi through the upper body and head, while LV3 moves Qi through the lower body and pelvis. Together, they create smooth circulation from top to bottom.

But the real magic is emotional. LI4 helps you let go and LV3 helps you move forward. This makes the “Opening of the Four Gates” perfect for stuck grief, lingering resentment, or that sense of being trapped in the past: when your body holds on to what your mind cannot release.

Try it this late Autumn!

Use LI4 for a clear, liberating release of both physical and emotional tension. Like a crisp Autumn breeze sweeping away the old, this point will help you let go of what no longer serves you, sharpen your focus and restore a strengthening calmness for the season ahead.
