Shiatsu and its benefits

Shiatsu is a Japanese form of bodywork that is becoming increasingly popular around the world for its therapeutic benefits. In this blog post, we will explore what shiatsu is, how it works, and the many benefits it can provide for your physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a form of treatment that originated in Japan in the early 20th century. The word "shiatsu" means "finger pressure" in Japanese, which describes the main technique used in this form of treatment. Shiatsu practitioners use their fingers, thumbs, and palms to apply pressure to specific points on the body, known as acupressure points, to release tension and improve the flow of energy in the body.

Shiatsu is based on the same principles as traditional Chinese medicine, which sees the body as a complex network of channels, or meridians, through which energy, or "qi," flows. When this energy is blocked or stagnant, it can lead to physical, emotional, and spiritual imbalances that can cause pain, illness, and disease. Shiatsu aims to restore the flow of energy in the body by stimulating the acupressure points along these meridians.

How Does Shiatsu Work?

During a shiatsu session, the practitioner will ask you to lie down on a padded mat or futon on the floor, fully clothed. They will use their fingers, thumbs, and palms to apply pressure to specific points on your body, using a variety of techniques such as kneading, tapping, and stretching.

Shiatsu is a form of holistic therapy that considers the whole person, not just their physical symptoms. Therefore, the practitioner may also consider your emotional state, lifestyle, and any other factors that may be contributing to your health concerns.

The pressure applied during a shiatsu session is firm but gentle, and it should never be painful. If you experience discomfort, be sure to let your practitioner know so they can adjust their technique accordingly. A typical session lasts around 60-90 minutes, although shorter or longer sessions are also available.

What Are the Benefits of Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a gentle, non-invasive therapy that has many benefits for both the body and the mind. Here are some of the ways shiatsu can help improve your health and well-being:

  1. Reduces stress and anxiety: Shiatsu massage reduces tension in the body that helps alleviate stress and promote relaxation; lying down, dispossessing the body parts in itself is a relaxing experience.
  2. Relieves pain: Shiatsu can help relieve a range of physical ailments, including back pain, headaches, and digestive issues.
  3. Improves sleep: Shiatsu has been shown to improve sleep quality and reduce insomnia. This is because the physical stimulation increases blood circulation which sends signals to the brain that tell it to relax.
  4. Boosts energy levels: The stimulation of the flow of energy in Shiatsu improves overall vitality and energy levels.
  5. Enhances mental clarity: Shiatsu’s nourishing physical touch combined with focus on energy (through acupressure points and meridians) restores balance to the body and mind which can help improve mental clarity and focus.
  6. Strengthens the immune system: Shiatsu helps to promote a healthy immune system by improving the flow of energy and removing blockages in the body (see Chapter 1: 9-16, "The Foundations of Shiatsu" by Chris Jarmey).

Whether you are dealing with physical pain, emotional stress, or simply looking for a way to relax and unwind, shiatsu is the perfect therapy for you.
