The Small Intestine channel governs the assimilation of nourishment, both physically and energetically. On the physical level, the Small Intestine receives food from the Stomach and, under the guidance of the Spleen, separates it into “pure” and “impure” parts. The “pure” food is transported to the organs and limbs while the “impure” is sent down to the Large intestine for elimination. Just as it separates the pure from impure in the digestive process, it also sifts through the influx of thoughts and emotions, helping us prioritise and make clear decisions.
To explore the functions of the Small Intestine and discover key therapeutic points along its meridian, take a look at Fundamentals of Chinese Medicine by Giovanni Maciocia or in Shiatsu Theory and Practice by Carola Beresford-Cooke (Chapter 14).
The acupressure point, Small intestine 4 (also known as SI4) is located on the outer edge of the palm, in the small depression between the base of the little finger bone (5th metacarpal) and the wrist bone (carpal bone).
In most cases, a single acupuncture point on its own doesn't create a strong enough effect, so often practitioners press multiple related points together for better results. However, SI4 stands out for its particularly noticeable impact on its own, especially in cases of Liver and Gallbladder Damp-Heat, a combination of internal heat and dampness. Dampness is a metaphorical "wetness" or "heaviness" that slows down the movement of energy (Qi) and fluids in the body. It often makes you feel tired or sluggish, mentally foggy, and heavy in the limbs. In the cases of damp-heat, symptoms such as tiredness, bloating, or jaundice can be treated by stimulating SI4.
Press SI4 with your thumb or index finger, applying firm but gentle pressure in a circular motion or steady hold. Massage or hold 1-2 minutes.
Key benefits of stimulating SI4 are:
Supports digestion
- Enhances the separation of “pure” from “impure” nutrients in the Small Intestine
- Clears digestive heat, like bloating and abdominal discomfort
Relieves pain and muscle tension
- Alleviates pain and stiffness in the wrist, forearm, elbow, shoulder and neck
- Treats tendonitis or neck stiffness
Clears heat and dampness
- Reduces excess heat in the body like inflammation or fever
- Drains dampness which eases swelling or heaviness
Emotional support
- In TCM, the Small Intestine and Heart are both associated with the fire element, representing emotions like joy and agitation. In turn, SI4 assists the Heart meridian with promoting these emotions as well as with mental clarity
The power of point pairing: Small Intestine 4 (SI4) and Large Intestine 4 (LI4)
As mentioned earlier, points used together can amplify their effect on the body. This is certainly the case for SI4 and LI4, a great duo for relieving muscle pain and upper body tension. LI4's broad pain-relieving action complements SI4's focus on the wrist and its meridian pathway, making them an ideal combination for conditions like tendonitis or mild carpal tunnel syndrome. Together, they also support flow of digestion, reduce bloating, and clear heat and inflammation throughout the body.
Try SI4 this holiday!
While the holiday season is meant to be a time of rest, it often comes with added stress, whether from planning, travelling, or socialising. That's where SI4 comes in. In TCM, SI4 is known for its calming effects, both physically and emotionally. Stimulating it through acupressure may ease that holiday anxiety, support your digestion, and maintain mental clarity during those less restful moments.
