Zen and harmony

A combined Power

The Shiatsu and macrobiotic lifestyle is the combination of two holistic approaches to health and wellness that have been more recently growing in popularity. Shiatsu is a form of Japanese massage therapy, based on traditional Chinese medicine, that focuses on pressure points and meridians to promote bodily balance and healing (see my blog on shiatsu). The Macrobiotic diet, on the other hand, is a diet that emphasises the importance of avoiding toxins and processed foods (see my blog on macrobiotic eating). In this blog, we will explore the benefits of combining these two practices to overall wellbeing, as well as some tips to help incorporate them into daily routine.

The benefits of the Shiatsu-Macrobiotic lifestyle

  1. Promotes Balance and Harmony in the Body

When energy flows freely, it supports the circulation of blood, nutrients, and other vital substances to organs and tissues, improving overall health. Blocked or stagnant energy is thought to cause discomfort or disease. Shiatsu’s technique helps release these blockages by applying pressure on pressure points and meridians (streams of energy in the body) so energy can flow smoothly. Similarly, a balanced macrobiotic diet, that aligns with yin-yang principles, promotes equilibrium and prevents imbalances that might cause disruptions in energy flow. When these two practices are combined, they can help restore and maintain balance and harmony to the body.

  1. Enhances Digestion and Nutrient Absorption

Whole, natural foods, emphasised in a macrobiotic diet, provide optimal nutrition as well as being significantly easier to digest. When united with Shiatsu, which improves nutrient absorption and stimulation of digestive organs through the flow of energy, you will  ensure optimal digestion and nutrient intake in your body, and an overall better health.

  1. Reduces Stress and Promotes Relaxation

Shiatsu is known for its ability to promote relaxation and reduce stress. When combined with the mindfulness and stress-reducing techniques of macrobiotics, this can create a powerful synergy for reducing stress and promoting relaxation. This can help to lower cortisol levels, reduce inflammation, and promote better overall health and wellbeing.

Tips for adopting a Shiatsu-macrobiotic lifestyle

  1. Focus on Whole, Natural Foods

Introduce plenty of whole grains (Brown rice, barley, oats, buckwheat), vegetables, legumes, and other plant-based foods (minimal to none processed) into your diet. This can help achieve optimal digestion and nutrient uptake, as well as provide the energy and nutrients needed to support a healthy body.

  1. Practice Mindful Eating

Macrobiotics emphasises the idea of ‘mindful eating’, which involves being fully present and aware while eating. Take time to chew your food; savour the flavours and textures. This will also help promote better digestion and absorption of nutrients, and encourage a relaxed, enjoyable relationship with food.

  1. Incorporate Shiatsu Treatment

Incorporating regular shiatsu massage into your routine can help to promote balance and harmony in the body, as well as reduce stress and promote relaxation. Ensure you work with a shiatsu practitioner qualified to develop a customised treatment plan that meets your unique needs and goals.

  1. Practise Other Mind-Body Techniques

In addition to Shiatsu and Macrobiotics, there are many other mind-body techniques that can support your health and wellbeing. Consider implementing practices such as yoga, meditation, Tai Chi, or Qigong into your routine; all aim to foster balance and harmony within the body.
