As mentioned in the previous blog, Winter is associated with the element of water, the kidneys, and the bladder.
In TCM theory, every major organ in our body has a dedicated energetic pathway. These pathways allow energy (Qi) to flow throughout the body, keeping everything functioning properly. When Qi becomes deficient, stagnant or blocked, our body is more prone to developing diseases. During the season of winter, these may manifest as ear aches, low back pain, knee pain, urinary issues, anxiety or fatigue. Among the 350 acupressure points on our body, Bladder 23 (BL23) works exceptionally well, during the winter season, in preventing these diseases.
BL23 is located on the lower back, specifically at the level of the second lumbar vertebra, roughly the width of two fingers, lateral to the spine. If you were to place your hands on your hips, this point sits roughly where your thumbs would rest on your back, near the waistline.
BL23 is associated with the Bladder meridian (meridians are briefly explained in this blog) and is considered a key point for strengthening the kidneys, which store the body’s vital essence and govern water metabolism, reproduction and bone health. Stimulating this point is thought to tonify kidney energy, alleviate lower back pain, and support overall vitality. It’s often used for fatigue, urinary problems, weak knees, or even conditions tied to aging, since the kidneys are linked to longevity.
To apply acupressure, with your thumbs or knuckles, press firmly but gently on the point for about 1-2 minutes, remembering to breathe deeply. If there’s an energy imbalance, it is normal to feel a little tender.
Key benefits of stimulating BL23 are:
- Tonifies the Kidneys
- Regulates the water passages and benefits urination
- Benefits and warms the uterus
- Benefits the ears and eyes
- Strengthens the lumbar region
- Alleviates Oedema
- Helps to clear Blood in the urine
The power of point pairing: Bladder 23 and Kidney 10 (KI10)
Point pairing is a common acupressure technique, which involves stimulating two or more acupressure points simultaneously to enhance therapeutic outcome. A particularly effective combination for relieving lower back pain is Bladder 23 (BL23) and Kidney 10 (KI10). Additionally, because the kidney meridian is closely connected to the lower back, stimulating these points can help strengthen kidney function, boosting energy levels and overall vitality.
It’s worth noting that acupressure points can often be paired in multiple ways, depending on the desired outcome. For example, Kidney 10 (KI10) can also be paired with Bladder 66 (BL66) for a different set of benefits, as discussed in this blog. This versatility highlights the adaptability of acupressure and its ability to address a wide range of concerns.
